Your family dentist in Cypress

For most people, a regular check-up with your dentist is recommended every 6 months. Regular dental check-ups are important in maintaining your oral health, and will assist in the early identification of tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental related issues. Identifying any problems early will ultimately reduce the cost and discomfort that may be associated with dental treatments.

Teaching your child about the importance of oral health at an early age is extremely important, and will encourage a lifetime of healthy habits. As a parent, it is always best to trust your own instincts regarding whether or not your feel your child is ready to visit the dentist for the first time. Your child’s first visit to the dentist should be stress-free and an opportunity for them to get used to the environment, meet their dentist, and sit in the chair. The team at Cypress Cosmetic & Family Dentistry employ a range of techniques to ensure your child has an enjoyable and memorable first experience at the dentist.

We recommend introducing a routine for brushing your baby’s teeth as soon as his or her first tooth appears. It is best to use a baby toothbrush to protect their teeth and gums. Toothpaste is not recommended for infants under 1 year of age, and after this stage, a children’s toothpaste should be used until your child reaches 6 years of age.

Flossing should be as important as brushing in your daily oral health routine. Brushing alone will not remove plaque and debris from between your teeth. The American Dental Association recommends cleaning between your teeth once a day. This is important because plaque that is not removed by brushing and flossing can eventually harden into calculus or tartar. Flossing may also help prevent gum disease and cavities.

Routine cleanings are generally recommended every 6 months for everyone to maintain teeth health and promote longevity of the teeth.

Deep Cleaning or scaling and root planning is preformed to treat periodontal disease. We can tell if this is occurring by having routine x-rays taken and by measuring your gum pockets. This is where any pockets that are 4mm or greater with bleeding are a risk for the disease.

There is a bacteria in the mouth that gets into the gum pocket and starts to eat on the bone causing bone loss to occur. This bacteria can not only cause enough bone loss to make the teeth mobile or cause loss of teeth but it can also get into the blood stream and cause other health concerns such as heart disease, stroke or respiratory problems.

We treat this infection with the deep cleaning by using a topical anesthetic to make you comfortable and clean down below the gums along the root structure of the teeth making sure it’s free of any calculus and also cleaning out the infection.

After the therapy you will be given instructions for home care and brought back for a follow up in 4-6 weeks.

This will start you off for your routine maintenance cleanings to keep you in a healthy state.

A crown is like a precision made helmet that is specifically designed to fit over a prepared tooth. This is an ideal way to treat heavily filled, root canal treated, cracked, broken or worn teeth and helps to protect the tooth from further damage. Placing a crown can dramatically increase the life of a tooth that you may feel is ready for the bin. They are made by a highly trained technical specialist in a laboratory using accurate models of your own teeth. This way the best fit, shape and bite is ensured.

A root canal treatment involves the nerve of a tooth being replaced by filling material and sealant. This treatment is necessary when the nerve of the tooth is irreversibly inflamed or dead.

Not all toothaches need to end in a root canal treatment, and this is one of the reasons why we stress the importance of early intervention.

Not all teeth requiring root canal treatment will be painful. When the nerve of the tooth is dead, it is actually the buildup of infection under the tooth that causes the toothache. This may take some time to occur, and may not happen at all if an abscess (pimple on the side of the gum) has formed.

Having a root canal treatment will lead to the remaining tooth structure becoming brittle, and a crown is usually advised to protect what remains.

Yes. Extensive research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth under the supervision of a dentist is safe. In fact, many dentists consider whitening the safest cosmetic dental procedure available. Tooth whitening is not recommended for children under 13 years of age and pregnant or lactating women.
